This review is from: Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5X Macro Lens for Canon SLR Cameras (Electronics)
I got this lens a couple years ago and use it extensively. It is well constructed and easy to use with any Canon EOS body, though it must be focused manually. This is the only tool I know of that enables easy *field* photography above 2x magnification. I have stalked the tiniest insects and peered into the hearts of flowers with this astounding lens, and my images are crisp and clean every time. It comes with Tripod Ring B (same one as several other Canon lenses use, just in black), which greatly aids switching to a vertical format without having to reposition everything.

Buy the MR-14EX ring flash with this, as it is impossible to see *anything* in normal daylight conditions at 5x. Its focus lamps frequently help in obtaining sharp pictures, though even they can't provide enough light to help you much when the lens is stopped down. A focus rail is also helpful--I use the Velbon macro slider since it moves in two directions, not just one. Tripod use is essential,... Read more

I had to knock one star off of the rating because this is lens is so difficult to use. It is definitely not for the point and click crowd. But once you get the hang of it, it's produces beautiful and stunning images. It's borderline microscopic photography, as you'll see details you can't see with your eyes.

Great images, but there's a lot of caveats...

First off, this is a manual focus lens in the old-school sense of the word. Meaning there is no focus ring and you adjust the focus by moving the camera or subject backwards or forwards. This wouldn't be that big of a deal except, as noted elsewhere, the focus distance is amazingly short. It's time consuming to manuever everything into place and get focus on the bit your interested in.

Also, you have to really stop down to f16. This produces two problems. 1) you need a lot of light on the subject. I'm using two 1000w strobes in soft boxes, which may be a little overkill, but not by much. 2) dust... Read more

I mainly use this lens inside the studio, so I use studio lights to control the lighting of a subject. The higher the magnification, the more lighting is needed.

I use a tripod to photograph and either move the subject in focus, or change the magnification from the magnification ring of the lens. I set the aperture to f/16 (smallest aperture for this lens) to make sure I get maximum depth of field and sharpest result.

The magnification mechanism works by increasing the distance between the glass and the film/sensor. So if you move the magnification ring fast enough, you can feel some air flowing, just like the bellows. I used this lens on a Canon EOS 10D and forgot to clean the shutter chamber from dust, the magnification movement from 5:1 to 1:1 pushed some of the dust particles on the sensor, so make sure you clean the chamber.

All of you out there that are reading this review of the Tamron 70-200 are probably in one of two categories. 1) Looking for a fast low light zoom but don't wont to pay the price of the Nikon/Canon 2.8 tele or 2) Your looking for a backup telezoom for your Nikon/Canon. I do wedding, family, sports shoots as a side biz and I'm in category 1. You're probably worried about buying it and it not Auto Focusing fast enough or having some other issues that you've read......because that was a concern of mine. Let me put you at ease.....don't worry, the Tamron 70-200 is fantastic! In fact I was so pleased that I ended up purchasing other Tamron lenses. The 28-75 f/2.8 and also the 17-35 f/2.8-4mm and all 3 have been exceptional to say the least.

AF - Lets get to what everyone is concerned about...Auto Focus. I have two Nikons that I've use this lens on. A D5000 (cropped 1.5x sensor) that I use for quick pics of the kids and vacations (non paying gigs) and a D700 full... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Tamron vs. it's main competitors, May 12, 2010
By
OZ (New Jersey USA) - See all my reviews
I was doing my research prior to buying this lens for couple of weeks. I read everything I could find on the internet about this lens as well as it's competitors.

First, let me provide you with quick summary of my findings:

1. Major competitors for this lens are:

a. Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 OS. This lens is very sharp according to all reviews I read. It has fast and precise auto focus, high quality image stabilization. This is clearly the best lens out there. The negative side is cost (3 times as much as Tamron!) and watch out for defective lens (quality control issues). Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II AF-S NIKKOR Lens For Nikon Digital SLR Cameras

b. Sigma 70-200mm f2.8. This version doesn't have image stabilizer. Compare to Tamron it has faster focus but lower quality glass. Image... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great lens at the great price. The best lens of Tamron. Nikon version., July 24, 2008
By

(REAL NAME)
I have used this lens 3 weeks so far, took around 300 pictures. This is the greatest lens Tamron has ever made, I think! I were so surprised about its optical performance, far more than what I expected!! I owned Tamron 28-75 before and this lens is even much better optically. Super sharp in all aperture stops, even at 2.8 ! The colors are very true-to-life and bokeh are so wonderful, creamy. The AF is pretty accurate although not very quiet ( on my D80), but still quieter than the Nikon 80-200 I tried before. The weight: lightest in the class. Built: very nice. You can take off the tripod collar easily to make it much lighter if you don't need a tripod. If you don't shoot pro and fast sports to earn money, this lens will meet all your needs. The only missing on this lens is VC ( or VR). But you can not require that at this price! Get it, and you will happy with it.

This review is from: Neewer 0.43x 72mm Wide Angle Lens with Macro for Canon EOS 7D, 60D, EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, 1v, XL2, XH A1, EF 35mm f/1.4L USM, EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (Electronics)
I'm using the Canon 60D with the EFS 18-200mm lens and have been craving just a little more room when zoomed all the way out (mostly for architectural photography).

Unfortunately, this adapter didn't really give me anything that was more usable. As promised, it did broaden the field, but when I compared images taken with and without, I discovered that all of the added room was beset by vignetting. It's a potentially interesting effect if used creatively, but that's not what I was seeking.

It didn't take long to figure out that this would be just taking up space in my bag, so I returned it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money, July 31, 2011

This review is from: Neewer 0.43x 72mm Wide Angle Lens with Macro for Canon EOS 7D, 60D, EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, 1v, XL2, XH A1, EF 35mm f/1.4L USM, EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (Electronics)
Works as described. I use it for my Canon 7d on the 28-135mm IS lens. When zoomed all the way out, the wide angle works great. However, expect chromatic aberration when zooming in with the wide angle attached. This is not a problem for me though because I wouldn't be using a wide angle if I was just going to zoom in anyway. The macro works excellent! Without the adapter, the closest object I could focus on was about 1 foot away. With the adapter, I can focus on something about one inch away from the lens!

If you are don't have bags of money, then buy this adapter for around $40 instead of buying $2,000 worth of wide angle and macro lenses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value for price, November 23, 2011

This review is from: Neewer 0.43x 72mm Wide Angle Lens with Macro for Canon EOS 7D, 60D, EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, 1v, XL2, XH A1, EF 35mm f/1.4L USM, EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (Electronics)
This screw on lens extension for the 28-135 proved to be a great value for the money. I was after a wider angle, as the 28-135 is pretty limiting, even though it has a 73mm width. I looked for examples of use online, to find none, so I went ahead and purchased one, as it was under 30 bucks. It has been so worth it. It adds another 20% into the field of view. My biggest worry was distortion towards the edges, and I have found very little to none with what I have shot. It has to be all the way zoomed out, or you start getting blur, which is kind of fun too, as it gives a "Lensbaby" Type effect, which those are much more expensive. Basically blurring out all but the center of the photo. The most use I have gotten out of it is with Video. The 7D shoots great video, and this wider angle has helped allot, as you get a much wider angle, in all directions.
For under 30$ it has been an excellent value.
