Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon Mount Digital SLR Cameras

Product Description

Sigma Corporation adds unique, anti-shake technology to award-winning 17-70mm lens Sigma announced the new Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM. This large aperture standard zoom lens offers an aperture of F2.8 at the 17mm focal length and is ideal for many situations such as portraits, sports, macro and general photography The OS (Optical Stabilizer) function offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. The maximum aperture of F2.8 makes this lens ideal for hand held photography as well as producing an attractive background blur and high speed auto focus. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 22cm (8.7..) throughout the entire zoom range and maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.7, making it ideal for close-up photography. It is possible to focus as close as approximately 4.7cm from the tip of the lens to the subject making this lens particularly useful for close-up photography. Three aspherical lenses and one ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass element provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations. High image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides high contrast images. The incorporation of HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures a quiet and high speed AF. This lens has a rounded 7 blade diaphragm which creates an attractive blur to the out of focus areas of the image

  • Sigma Corporation is pleased to announce its newly upgraded 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM lens.
  • Focusing distance of 8.7 inches

This review is from: Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon Mount Digital SLR Cameras (Electronics)
I received the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 OS HSM from Amazon five days ago. I have taken about 400 shots with this lens, including landscapes, indoor family gatherings with flash, and a sporting event in a large, well-lit indoor arena. It seems to me that this lens works as advertised. I don't see focus problems with this lens in either the AI Servo to AI Focus modes on my Canon XSi. The XSi exposure metering seems to work fine with the Sigma 17-70, and I cannot see anything wrong with color accuracy. The finish, appearance, and feel of the lens are pleasing. I like it, and it certainly seems to be a good value given its relatively low cost vs. function. I have awarded four stars in my rating only because of my limited experience with this lens. If this lens continues to work as it has so far, I would award a fifth star.

Photography is my hobby, not my profession, but I carry my camera to work and shoot nearly every day. I cannot afford high-end camera equipment, so I... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Lens for the Budget., February 27, 2010

This review is from: Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon Mount Digital SLR Cameras (Electronics)
I purchased this lens to replace my 18-55mm canon kit lens. I didn't read too much reviews on this lens because it was new, but I heard relatively good reviews on the older model and with the addition of the HSM and optical stabilizer, it gave it more appeal. It is a great walk around lens. It has good range and the f2.8-4 is nice, but the 2.8 does disappear really quickly when zooming in from wide angle. It takes sharp photos from wide angle to zoom, and macro. The Body is well built with a solid construction. The focus and zoom rings feel good when rotating. The HSM is really quiet while auto focusing. The auto focus is a bit slow and sometimes has problems focusing during low light situations. Overall the lens works well and it gives me good results. Definitely a great replacement to the canon kit lens.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very sharp lens, excellent image stabilization, March 20, 2010
This review is from: Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon Mount Digital SLR Cameras (Electronics)
I've had this lens for only a few days, but it's clearly a worthy successor to the old 17-70mm non-stabilized lens that it replaced. It is well built, both the AF and image stabilization work well, and is compact. The f:2.8 - 4.0 maximum aperture with the built in stabilization gives it a significant low light advantage. Images are very sharp. This is a great step up from the standard 18-55IS lens that comes on the camera, giving both better low light performance and greater range. I have a Canon 50D and checked the accuracy of the AF, and found that it was quite accurate - it does not front or back focus.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good lens for just over a $100, March 3, 2009
I own both Canon gear (Canon 40D) and Nikon gear (D40). Since Nikon is my cheaper lighter gear, I am not to invest a lot of $$$ into it. While D40 is light and cheap, it is an excellent camera which I use all the time for many reasons. I needed a tele lens to compliment my kit 18-55 lens (which is excellent in itself and gets great reviews). I was between Tamron 70-300 and Sigma 70-300 APO since Nikon's 70-300 is 4 times more expensive than Tamron and Sigma. After reading tons of reviews and playing with both Tamron and Sigma, I chose Tamron and I am very happy I did. There are several versions of Tamron's 70-300, however this one is the latest, 2008 version, which autofocuses on D40, 40X and 60. This lens is remarkable for the amount it is sold for. I've taken many great photos with it on vacation and around town. It is also very compact and light. While it is not an ideal lens to shoot Birds in Flight (neither is D40 with its 2.5 fps) due to its slow autofocusing mechanism,... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good lens with some nice extras, July 23, 2006
The new Di lenses from Tamron are designed to work well with digital cameras, although those with the Di will work for 35mm as well (Di-II only work with smaller, APS-C chip size digital cameras). This is an improvement on the fine 70-300 LD (Low Dispersion glass) design. The major improvements in this lens are in the coatings, to help reduce any color bias, and minimize reflections. Additionally, lens manufacturers are doing more inside the barrels to reduce reflections.

Like the older LD design, the new lens has a close-up mode (not strictly "macro") position that allows images 1/2 lifesize on the negative. That's about twice the size of most 300mm zooms lacking this feature.

Compared to the Canon lenses, it includes a lens hood ($$ from Canon) and a six year USA warranty (vs. 1 year). It's a bit noiser than the Canon lenses in autofocusing. Additionally, the Canon 75-300 III is a considerably older design, which came out well before the needs of... Read more

If you're buying this for one of the new Sony Alpha series, this might be your best bet. The Tamron will include a 6-year USA warranty. It also includes the lens hood. The Sony 75-300 is repackaging of the older Konica-Minolta 75-300 lens, a lens that hit the market before... Read more

I was initially apprehensive about the short focal length, but it's very easy to handle, has a decent heft to it, and is simply a superb lens.

The bokeh is pleasing, and the pictures tack sharp. I have not had much success with Tamron before, but decided to give this one a try.

A very good macro lens, and doubles as a decent portrait lens.

I am very glad I did !

This review is from: Tamron AF 60mm f/2.0 SP DI II LD IF 1:1 Macro Lens for Sony Digital SLR Cameras (Electronics)
The AF60 is my first Tamron lens, and I'm not disappointed! With the rebate I paid $400, which is really, really hard to beat for the quality and versatility of the lens.

Look at the photos I've posted and not only is the lens an excellent macro lens, but it's an excellent portrait lens as well. Nice sharp focus, excellent color and bokah. The lens is primarily plastic construction so it doesn't add a lot of weight to my already full camera bag, but the downside of that is......plastic construction. But again, both of my Sigma lenses that have primarily metal construction cost twice as much.

The biggest weakness in my mind with the lens is the slow focus, it does not have a high speed focus system. The focusing is quiet, but quite slow, in fact the slowest of any of my professional quality lenses.

The F2 lens speed is however tremendous, I believe this is 3 clicks faster than my F2.8 Sigma, so the lens works really well in low light, but not if... Read more
